Course Selection for students entering Year 13

Year 13 Course Selection Information

Year 13 students select five Modules to study each Trimester and 15 throughout the year.

They will also select study skills and a career option during Term 4 2023.

Students accepted as part of the Health Science Academy must study two or more Science courses each trimester. Students seeking an exemption from this need to consult with Whaea Losa before making their selections. This document outlines the requirements.

The Kelston Girls' College Curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students by providing a wide variety of courses available for selection. Level 3 courses provide a stimulating academic challenge. The results of Level 3 standards will be used to qualify for University Entrance and "limited entry" courses. Please review the university entrance information and the University of Auckland information before making your selections. These are in the menu on the right-hand side.

If you aim for university entrance, taking a minimum of 3 UE subjects across all 3 trimesters is advisable.

Students entering Year 13 can also opt into a Trades course. These are delivered by outside providers off-site from Kelston Girls' College. They can be selected in line 5 and require an interview with Ms Hinson before your place is confirmed. During your interview, your options will be finalised. Enrolling in a trade course may involve missing courses other than the ones in the line you select trades in.

*not eligible for endorsement and is not a UE-approved course.

  • Most courses consist of 16-20 credits across modules
  • To obtain Level 3 National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), a candidate needs to get at least 60 credits.
  • Most Year 13 students study for Level 3 to gain entry to University courses. However, a full (5-course, 15 module) Level 3 programme is not appropriate or advised for anyone without a Level 2 certificate. Pathways modules, Core Maths and Communication English are advised in this case.
