Module selection for students entering Year 12

Year 12 Module Selection Information

All Year 12 students study this compulsory curriculum:

  • English

Students are free to select what context in which they study this core curriculum.

Students who are accepted as part of the Health Science Academy will need to study two (or more) modules of Science, with at least one Biology, per trimester. Students seeking an exemption from this need to consult with Whaea Losa before making their selections. This document outlines the requirements.

The modules have been designed to meet the needs of students by providing a wide variety of courses and contexts available for selection. They will give students in-depth learning in some curriculum areas and a broad knowledge base from the supplementary subjects.

As students enter their second year of NCEA, they must choose their courses wisely. Students should select a minimum of 3 subjects they follow for the entire year, i.e. if a student wishes to study health in depth, then in line 1, they select all the modules in the health curriculum area. This will allow them to achieve course endorsement and have a firm foundation for their studies in year 13. They will also keep their learning broad due to the complementary subjects studied alongside health.

If you wish to gain endorsement in traditional subject areas, then it is essential to select at least 1 module per trimester in that subject, i.e. if you would like a History endorsement, then select one module of History in Trimester 1, Trimester 2 and Trimester 3.  Module and Level 2 National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) endorsements are also possible.

Students entering Year 12 can also opt into a Trades course. These are delivered by outside providers off-site from Kelston Girls' College. They are selected in Line 5 and require an interview with Ms. Hinson before confirming your place. Enrolling in a trade course may involve missing teaching time for other modules you have selected. This will be discussed in your interview.
