Volcanoes of Samoa - Samoan and Geography

1VOLC1LC
Courses Description

Head of Pathway: Mrs K. Lousi.

This course will focus on teaching students how to outline, explain and evaluate a geographic challenge (a problem around space, place and the environment), different perspectives and viewpoints considered in decision-making around that challenge, and using evidence and geographic terminology in that evaluation. In the context of a geographic challenge in the Pacific, students must include in their discussion an appropriate Pacific concept, such as vā, kuleana, or fonua.

Both English and Samoan literacy skills will be practised.

Samoan Geography-shared topics include exploration of regions and significant geographical features. Students also explore the relationship between people, culture, and their environments.

Examples of geographic challenges include:

  • population pressures
  • building in flood zones
  • natural disasters
  • pollution.

Perspectives are a set of ideas that shape our way of looking at a geographic challenge. They include social, economic, cultural, environmental, political, and Indigenous perspectives. Perspectives shape peoples’ values.
