Decolonisation in Aotearoa & the Pacific - English and History

2DECO2EC
Courses Description

Head of Pathway:

This is a thematic exploration of how indigenous people in Aotearoa and the Pacific have resisted colonisation and have sought to build societies based around indigenous power and knowledge.

Could possibly involve student choice: Māori Renaissance and the Mau Movement in Samoa.

*Within this module, students will integrate historical learnings into their perspectives as writers, focusing on ‘voice’ and characterisation in both poetic and prose writing.  The intent is to engage the writer within to make and create meaning of texts which will contribute towards an English standard - writing folio and reinforce connections to ideas about decolonisation in three parts - self, others, community.

*Students will work, internally reinforcing skills and thinking, towards analysis of texts thematically connected between literary and historical content to articulate their judgements and conclusions about how writers present big ideas using literary techniques with a focus on human experience, historical significance and personal engagement.  Supporting their points with strong structure, reinforcing evidence, in a timely fashion, are skills that they will develop in this module.

Students will complete one internal assessment (covering a History and English standard) and prepare for external examinations.
