Music for Justice - Social Science and Music

Courses Description

Our Integrated Music and Social Studies class offers a unique, immersive learning experience that explores connections between historical events and musical evolution. Journey through time as we uncover how music has influenced and been influenced by social movements, cultural shifts, and historical milestones.

You will learn about songs that address social issues (e.g. protest songs, propaganda music, music from Aotearoa and the Pacific such a waiata and rap that address social justice and resistance).

In this class you will explore topics of civil rights, justice, protest, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and how people interact with governments, with a focus on musical case studies. Contexts will be from NZ, the Pacific, and the rest of the world.

You will like this song if you like learning about musical history, song writing, social justice and injustices, protest and activism.

Once a student makes their selections and confirms these, any changes must be accompanied by a letter of support from Whanau and are subject to available spaces in courses. 

All Junior Bilingual students must select the literacy and numeracy modules in the language of their pathway each trimester and one other integrated language module  (3 out of 4 of their modules must be bilingual).

All senior Bilingual students must take all modules available in the language of their pathway.
